Pitfalls: Disco attacks (2)
Sometimes something extra is needed to defend against a discovered attack and the ideas from the previous lesson are not enough. The counterattack can then be an important means of preventing material loss.
What should you do?
Win material by performing a discovered attack. Be careful not to give the other player a chance to defend by counterattacking.
With 1.Rc8 and 1.Rd3, white has two attractive options for a discovered attack. Both the bishop and the rook are attacked.
However, 1.Rd3 (the red arrow) allows a counterattack: 1...Rc6+! The intermediate check gives white no time to capture the bishop. On the next move, black can safely remove this piece.
Correct is therefore 1.Rc8! This keeps white in control of square c6 and thus prevents the intermediate check on c6. White wins material!
